In the year 2000, the 106th Congress of the United States designated this monument located in New Ulm, Minnesota, as the official symbol of all Americans of German descent.

According to the 2000 U.S. Census ("Ancestry" was not recorded in the 2010 census) there are more Americans of German descent than any other
ethnic group in the United States, making up over 15% of the population (around 50 million) of which approximately 1.5 million are bi-lingual in English and German.
